Adopter Personas for E-Mobility
The EV market is growing, and with the so-called early majority, the mass market begins. But the remaining combustion-engine drivers are not a homogeneous group. Some are still waiting for the right moment, others reject switching outright, and most simply haven’t looked into it yet. Anyone who wants to win over the “next segment” needs to know who they’re dealing with and how to convince them.
The study surveyed 1,000 combustion-engine drivers in Germany, selected to be representative by age, gender, and federal state. Based on values, attitudes, and practical factors such as living situation, charging access, and budget, four EV adopter personas were identified:
- Innovative Status Buyers
- Informed Realists
- Comfortable Bystanders
- Constrained Majority
Key finding: growth doesn’t come from further tapping into the already well-reached Innovative Status Buyers and Informed Realists segments, but from removing structural barriers for the Constrained Majority.
Alongside the extensive target group descriptions, a conjoint analysis examined how range and price influence each persona’s purchase decision for an EV.
The study thus provides a clear prioritization for product development, pricing, and communication in the race for the next generation of buyers.

Target group of the survey
Owners of combustion-engine vehicles and plug-in hybrids were surveyed for the study. Respondents were recruited to ensure the results are representative by age cohort, gender, and federal state.
Respondents were recruited across multiple access panels to avoid so-called panel effects.
Added value and benefits for providers of electric cars, charging technology and charging services
The charging personas for electromobility help not only providers of e-cars and charging technology but also services for charging at home, in (semi-)public spaces and at work.
Furthermore, the study helps manufacturers and providers to understand the important target group segments. This enables providers to both reach their target groups with the right content and the appropriate channels.
